Abstract

I will start my talk by giving an overview of the kinds of data that is being collected about us. Then, I will discuss Chris Anderson’s Big Data paradigm and its limits, given the problems of spurious correlations, false positive and negatives, overfitting, biases, and sensitivity. After  a criticism of some brute force data analytics approaches, I will show how data science intelligently combines data analysis with knowledge and models about systems. I further present some interesting cases of data analyses and perspectives on how we might generate and use data in the future to address the world’s challenges and make our planet more sustainable.
